Interview with Steven

Steven is a Category 2 racer who joined LGBRC in 2005. When asked how he got interested in cycling, he says, "I became interested in cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win his 6th Tour De France. The speed, grace, sprinting, sportsmanship, and the ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds drew me to road cycling like no other sport. Within a short amount of time I obtained and began putting in miles on an old 90's Trek road bike. I was eventually spotted riding by a local racing team director for California Giant who invited me to join as a Junior team member."

When asked what he considers his greatest cycling achievement, he answers, "In my entire career as a cyclist my all time great was being upgraded to a Cat 2. However as far as specific racing goes my greatest accomplishment was the Santa Rosa Criterium #2 in the 3's. It was cold, rainy and windy.

Halfway through the race the pace was pretty hot, every time an attack was pulled back another went off. Bell lap the rain is not letting up, but I was in a good position. With 800m to go I moved into 5th position but was knocked out of the line. Luckily a gap opened up and I took it moving into 3rd. Around the turn into 2nd position. I sprinted all out to take the line by a bike length. This win was special to me because I was just coming out of a cycling low where nothing seemed to go right. I realized at the end of the race that my improved performance was due to not only my own perseverance and hard work, but also the complete support from LGBRC and my coach Matt McNamara - I was home."

Steven adds, "I'm a student at Scotts Valley High School and enjoy swimming, relaxing while listening to music and hanging out with friends. "

When asked about his cycling goals for the future, he comments, " My goal within a few years is to upgrade to a Cat 1, and possibly move to a Division III pro team."
