About Mike
How did you become involved in cycling? Well,
I have an old roommate to thank for getting
me into cycling. Once upon a very long
time ago we rented a house with a one-year
lease. After about three months things
deteriorated enough so that I just absolutly
couldn't stand this one roommate. So
I needed some way to disappear for a
long period of time. I dug out my old
college-era 10 speed and I was off wobbling
down the road. And I haven't stopped
riding since. That was the only good
thing I could say about this roommate,
she got me onto a bike. |

What do you consider your greatest
cycling achievement?
Oh, this is a hard one. Was it maybe the first century
I finished? The first double-century? Nah. Maybe the
first time I broke the 40mph barrier? The 50mph barrier?
Nope. Possible the first time I got a top ten finish?
No, I don't think so. Riding from Los Angeles to Mono
Lake, twice? Good, but not quite. Being hit by a car?
Being chased by a dog? Definitely not. Finishing the
Death Ride? Better, but no. Taming a track bike? Being
beaten by a 'cross bike? Riding on the beach at Point
Reys? Riding through Badwater in Death Valley? Climbing
Bowman-On Orbit on a tandem? All good, but not there.
Becoming a tandem captain? Racing the tandem at the
Burley races? Getting closer. Wait I know, any
time spent on the big bike is worthwile.
Tell us
anything else about yourself. There
isn't much to tell. I'm 5ft 11inches
tall, weigh about 150 pounds but nobody
cares about that. I'm older than most
people think. I have a B.F.A. from
SJSU in art. I've always considered
myself fairly creative. Most people
only know me as "Spike". I like a good
cup of coffee, preferably Peets. I
like to try and have a lot of fun during
a ride, but I also ride well enough
to make my presence known.
Any
additional comments? Nah,
lets go ride.
