Lucia is a cat 4 racer who joined LGBRC in 2007. She enjoys crits, time trials and road racing.

" When asked how she got into cycling, she says, "I ran cross country and track in college, though a friend (now a Cat 1 racer) was always trying to get me to switch to cycling. I then went to veterinary medical school, where a former pro cyclist classmate tried to get me to start cycling. Instead I did nothing but study and get fat. Finally, in 2004, I broke my leg, ending my (non) running days, and at the same time moved to the bay area. I saw all the cyclists here, and was finally out of excuses. I knew that I would need instruction re: how to handle a bike (like, shifting for example, and using clipless pedals), how to ride around other cyclists and cars, etc. So, in March 2006 I bought a bike and joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training. I told my TNT coach that I wanted to race, and as he is a Los Gatos member, he encouraged me to join the team. My first race was over Memorial Day weekend 2007, and I was hooked, despite going down twice in the race and being rear ended with my bike ! on a trunk rack on the way home. That should tell you just how much I love this sport!"

When we asked her what she considers her greatest cycling achievement so far, she replied, "Since I've only been riding a short time, I haven't achieved much yet, but I think my performace in the 2007 Low Key Hillclimb series has laid the foundation for a great race season in 2008."

She continues, "By day I'm a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, and also instruct a class that uses horses to teach bedside manner and communication skills to medical students. For cross training, I ride my horse Smoothie, a retired Grand Prix jumper."
