Filip takes a
podium win at the Menlo Park Grand
Prix.
Filip is a cat 2 road racer
who joined LGBRC in 2006.
He first got interested
in cycling in his native Belguim. He jokes,
"When I was young, I always dreamt of wearing
body-tight outfits and shaving my legs."
Then on a more serious note, "When you're
born and raised in Belgium (moved to the
US when I was 16), some may venture to say
cycling is in your blood. And there's some
truth to that as you do get exposed to cycling
in many different ways. The more personal
answer to how I first got into cycling is
that I got into long distance running after
my collegiate soccer career at Stanford,
then became a triathlete that could run
fast, ride okay and was lucky to not drown
swimming. Soon that tune became: run fast,
ride fast and lucky to not drown swimming.
Finally, my friend Eric convinced me to
start racing."
When asked what he considers his greatest
cycling achievement, he comments,
"Hopefully
there will be more...
In terms of road racing, I've been finishing
consistently in the top 10 and took 2nd
place at the 2006 Pescadero Road Race after
attacking and solo'ing on the last climb
to finish in 2nd.
In terms of cyclo cross racing, I'm proud
of my first win at the 2006 Central Coast
Manzanita Park Cyclo Cross Race in Prunedale,
which was only my 4th cyclo cross race.
In terms of the team, I really
enjoy the friends I've made, the advice
and guidance they've provided and the camaraderie
on training rides and at races. Recently,
Steve Stewart and I decided to organize
a Saturday club ride and that has been a
fun and rewarding experience as well."
