After completing several successful seasons as a top
age-group triathlete (All-American Honorable Mention
in 2000), he joined the club in 2001 as a Cat. 3
team member. Carl quickly moved up to Cat. 2 after
competing in over 50 track and road events in 2002.
In 2003, Carl returned to the NORBA’s Expert ranks
by competing in several premier Northern California
events.
When asked what attracted him to cycling, he says, "I
got involved in cycling by delivering the San Jose
Mercury News on my morning paper route. The guy with
the route next to mine got a racing bike so I got one
as well. In high school my water polo coach convinced
me in to do triathlons. After several injuries from
running, I started road racing. In college
I raced for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo."
His fondest cycling memories include racing in three
Collegiate National Cycling Championships for Cal Poly,
San Luis Obispo ('92-'95), competing in the Ironman
World Championships in Kona, Hawaii and racing with
the pros at Superweek in 2002. My greatest cycling
achievement is racing in Pro 1-2 at Superweek when
I had just upgraded to Cat 2.
Also I was the first person ever to compete in the
collegiate national triathlon, mountain bike and road
races in the same year.
He says, "I have many interests including
spiritual theology, philosophy, ethics and accountability.
I recently completed a masters degree in theology but
I work as a financial consultant. I've enjoyed cycling
in every stage of life. I want to help introduce others
to cycling and ride for the rest of my life. I've competed
in BMX, triathlons, road, mountain, track and cyclocross
but most of all I enjoy riding with friends and meeting
new people."
Carl’s favorite quote comes from an ancient text that states, "He who neglects discipline despises his soul. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, before honor comes humility (Proverbs 15).” He adds, “Cycling is a great gift that combines ingenuity and passion. It has provided me a way to meet many great people and see new places while enjoying God’s creation."
